Environmental Precautions
D.T.R. Environmental Services is committed to the environment in both the storage and end usage of waste tires.
D.T.R. has secured a recycling permit for its Huntley location. They have limits on the stockpiles of tires that can be left on site. Local fire departments and the Department of Environment have been contacted to discuss safety precautions.
There are various misconceptions around about tires. PEI has a low volume of tires that is very manageable. People have misconceptions about tire derived aggregate because they associate it with burying of tires. It is not. It is a sustainable and economic engineering process.

Environmental Notes - Recycling Depots
Because nothing is being buried on the site and material cannot stay on site for more than a year this recycling center is considered a transfer station. D.T.R. has accepted a suggestion from Garth Simmons, compliance and assessment engineer with the Department of Environment, that the site be made available for quarterly visits by neighbours.
An asphalt millings pad has been prepared in the recycle yard for collecting such things as boards and metal from construction and demolition projects, tires and other material. Only inert material will be accepted. All loads will be subject to an inspection and will be turned away if unacceptable. If they are unsure, they will have the loads dumped on the asphalt pad with the understanding that the carrier will have to haul it away if it is deemed unacceptable.
The recycling depot hopes to be able to salvage 70-75 per cent of the material dropped off at the Huntley site. What’s left over will be hauled to Wellington for disposal. The alternative is that everything would go to Wellington for burial in a lined cell.
